Abstract

In Fig. 1, sheets of paper 10 enter the transport on two side by side spaced horizontal belts 11. Deflector 12 causes the sheets to turn 90 degrees and travel down two like-spaced vertical belts 13. Deflector 14 then feeds the sheets to belts 15.

Vacuum Transport

This vacuum transport includes a pair of stationary, vertically extending, vacuum plenums, and a pair of traveling belts which operate to carry items such as paper along a relatively long vertical run. In Fig. 1, sheets of paper 10 enter the transport on two side by side spaced horizontal belts 11. Deflector 12 causes the sheets to turn 90 degrees and travel down two like-spaced vertical belts 13. Deflector 14 then feeds the sheets to belts 15.

As shown in Fig. 2, each of the belts 13 includes a stationary vacuum plenum 16 which applies vacuum force to sheet 10, through openings 17 formed in the belt.

To prevent loss of vacuum normally seen in such a transport, coined sections 18, best seen in Fig. 3, are provided with a small hole 19 communicating with the vacuum force within the plenum. These coined sections provide a relatively large cross-sectional vacuum-force area which is operable to hold sheet 10 against the belts. For those belt holes and coined sections which do not "see" a sheet, the small holes 19 provide choked flow from atmosphere to the plenum. This choked flow insures that large amounts of air are not allowed to flow into the plenum. This large airflow would operate to destroy the vacuum force or, in the alternative, would require a large volume vacuum blower to sustain the vacuum.
