Copier Cleaning Station Testing

This method of testing operation of a copier's cleaning station is particularly useful with a xerographic or electrophotographic copier having a reusable photoconductor. Examples of such copiers are ones having photoconductor drums or belts.

The copier's cleaning station usually operates to clean the reusable photoconductor at a position after the copier's transfer station, and before the charge station. If the cleaning station fails to remove the residual toner image remaining on the photoconductor after transfer, the possibility exists that this image will appear as a light density image on the next copy to be run by the copier.

In order to test operation of the cleaning station, a document, such as a letter, may be placed on the copier's document glass, and a copy request of exceeding 50 copies can be entered on the copier's control console. A piece of clean white paper is placed over this document. After 40 to 50 copies have been imaged, the original document is rapidly pulled out from under the white paper sheet, and the copy run continues while imaging this white sheet onto the photoconductor. The copies of this white-sheet original are then inspected for residual image information, as a test of the performance of the cleaning station.

As an improvement on the process, the document, rather than being a letter, may contain a test image of parallel lines on a white background. The document is placed on the copier's document gla...
