Variable Pneumatic Capacitor

This variable pneumatic capacitor is an adjustable volume cylinder. It is used in a pneumatic or fluidic circuit where an air flow variable time delay is required to an output device.

This adjustable capacitor consists of a closed cylinder 1, an air input 6, an air output 5, a piston 2, piston O-ring seals 3 and an adjusting screw 4.

By positioning the adjusting screw 4 in or out, the piston 2 moves correspondingly within the cylinder and the volume 7 within the cylinder 1 is either decreased or increased. The time, therefore, to fill the cylinder 1 at a given air pressure and air flow is either decreased or increased.

It can be seen that the full air pressure coming in at input 6 may be delayed to output 5 the longest by adjusting to the largest volume. The time delay is a function of input air pressure, input air flow and volume of the cylinder 1.
