Universal Code Reader

This is a mask control system including code reading means for reading identification codes 11 formed or punched in a combination of 24 locations in a plastic mask frame 12, contained in a sealed mask cartridge 14.

The cartridge 14 with coded frame 11 inside, is inserted into a reader 16. The reader includes a transmission section primarily comprised of 24 infrared light-emitting diodes 19 and a receiver portion 21 primarily comprising 24 corresponding photosensors 23 and amplifiers.

The code on a particular frame 12 is read, the code signal transmitted to a reader control unit and then to a central processing unit for inventory control purposes, for example.

Infrared diodes 19 are advantages, since they can be matched to the sensors 23 for reduced sensitivity to ambient light, they do not expose photoresist and do not produce significant refraction through a plastic cartridge 14.
