Abstract

The figure shows a combined vacuum pencil and spring loaded cold-welder comprised of the housing 1 having the cylindrical cavity 2 connected to a vacuum source, so that the end 3 serves as a vacuum pencil for a workpiece, such as a solder preform. Spring loaded plunger 4 having a sharpened tip 5 is slidably mounted within the cavity 2 of the housing 1, to enable protrusion of the tip 5 beyond the terminal surface of the opening 3.

The figure shows a combined vacuum pencil and spring loaded cold-welder comprised of the housing 1 having the cylindrical cavity 2 connected to a vacuum source, so that the end 3 serves as a vacuum pencil for a workpiece, such as a solder preform. Spring loaded plunger 4 having a sharpened tip 5 is slidably mounted within the cavity 2 of the housing 1, to enable protrusion of the tip 5 beyond the terminal surface of the opening 3.

In operation, to cold-weld bond a solder preform to a substrate, a solder preform is engaged by action of the vacuum at the tip 3 of the housing 1, the housing 1 is then positioned over a substrate to be bonded, and then the spring loaded plunger 4 is released so that the tip 5 forcibly contacts the preform when adjacent to the substrate, thereby forming the cold-weld bond. The spring loaded plunger is then released, opening the vacuum port, ready for next operation.
