Efficient decoding schemes for 3-error correcting hexadecimal (BCH) errors in a received code word. For example, 4 errors in a code word sometimes are recognized by the decoder as 2 errors.

A simple scheme can be used to increase the error detection capability when the number of errors is greater than 3. After the decoder has calculated the error locations together with their corresponding error values, the error locations and values are fed into the syndrome generator to recompute the syndromes. If the recomputed syndromes are 0, the error locations and values are assumed to be correct. If the recomputed syndromes are nonzero, the errors are detected but uncorrected.

This scheme can be applied to any t-error correcting BCH decoder that decodes a (t+ l)-error into an i-error, where l +i <= t.
