Beveled Bernoulli Head

Described is a Bernoulli head which restricts vertical and lateral movement of a workpiece picked up by the head.

Lifting flat wafer like workpieces by using gaseous air flow has been long known in the art along with various heads of different kinds for that purpose. Generally conventional methods for supporting such workpieces involved the continuous discharge of air or other gaseous medium through an orifice in the head, such that a reduced pressure is created on the upper surface of the workpiece being picked up. This action thus produces a reduced static pressure such that the workpiece is supported and held against the pickup head.

Such pickup heads are normally provided with stops extending perpendicular to the head and with means of forcing the workpiece against the stops to maintain it in the fixed position relative to the stops, so that when the head is moved the workpiece will move along with the head.

By the simple expectancy of providing a beveled edge 11 around the entire periphery of the head 10, the present device avoids the necessity of using separate individual stops and separate means to hold and maintain the workpiece 12 against the stop. This inwardly beveled edge 11 shown in the drawing has an opening larger than the outer diameter of the workpiece 12 to be picked up.
