This detector is automated and is less complex and temperature sensitive than conventional detector systems.

In this apparatus, the chromatograPhic effluent is passed through an optical system consisting of an optical cell 10, a first screen 12, and a second screen 14 provided with a mosaic detector 16, and a lens system comprised of a first lens 18 and a second lens 20.

Two identical line patterns are provided on screens 12 and 14. The lens system projects the pattern on screen 12 to screen 14 through the optical cell 10. A diffused light source 22 is provided for making possible this projection.

When the effluent in cell 10 is of uniform concentration and laminar flow (no Schlieren patterns), the pattern projected from screen 12 exactly matches the pattern on screen 14. This matching of patterns can be detected by detector 16. However, when the effluent in cell 10 is of a nonuniform concentration, the patterns from screens 12 and 14 no longer match but produce a moire pattern. This is detected by the detector 16.

The change in the electrical output of the array in the detector 16 is analyzed by a computer and translated into a plot of composition versus time. In an automated process, the change in the output of the array can alternately be used to operate valves or metering devices for control of the system.
