Abstract

This is a ribbon drive mechanism, particularly one suitable for thermal-transfer printing. Ribbon Drive

This is a ribbon drive mechanism, particularly one suitable for thermal- transfer printing. In thermal-transfer printing, it is necessary to maintain the ribbon in close proximity to the document and highly desirable to advance the ribbon at the same velocity as the print head, only when printing occurs, to minimize the amount of ribbon used.

This ribbon drive comprises a cassete 1 containing a full reel of ribbon 2 and an empty reel 3 to receive the ribbon 4. The cassette drive is provided by a continuous belt 5 and a roll 6 to produce a constant ribbon velocity, as the ribbon is transferred from reel 2 to reel 3. An important element is the use of a pair of grooved, spring-loaded rollers 7 and 8, mounted on a gimbal 9. A stop 10 limits gimbal travel when the cassette is not in the printer.

When the cassette is loaded into the printer, it is positioned relative to the platen 11 so that flanges on grooved rollers 7 and 8 press the document 14 against the platen 11. The grooves in the rollers 7 and 8 are slightly wider than the ribbon and are .0001 to
.0002 inch deeper than the ribbon thickness. Therefore, the document is held against the platen, and the ribbon is closely confined, but not pressed against the document in the area between the rolls where the printing occurs.
