Abstract

This planar linkage is used for encoding the position of a stylus P on a tablet T. Links AO and CO are pivoted at fixed point O and the angles Theta and Phi, respectively, of the links are measured electrically. The changes in coordinates of P are given by the approximate expressions: x approximately = (Phi - Theta) Cos Theta + a y approximately = (Phi - Theta) Sin Theta + b.

Planar Linkage

This planar linkage is used for encoding the position of a stylus P on a tablet
T. Links AO and CO are pivoted at fixed point O and the angles Theta and Phi, respectively, of the links are measured electrically. The changes in coordinates of P are given by the approximate expressions: x approximately = (Phi - Theta) Cos Theta + a y approximately = (Phi - Theta) Sin Theta + b.

a and b are constants which depend on the relative positions of the xy and XY coordinate systems and the chosen starting angles of the two encoders.

This linkage can be used in chart recorders, plotters or robot manipulators.
