Preventing Copying of Classified Information

This mechanism prevents copying of classified or confidential information by a copier. The figure shows the functional configuration to be included within the copier unit. The information image from document 10 on holder 11 projects onto a scanner 12. Scanner 12 digitizes bar-coded background information lightly imprinted on document 10.

This digitized data is used via an I/O port 13 of a microprocessor 14 whose read only memory (ROM) 15 contains bar-coding data, assigned classification ratings, and copier passwords. The program in microprocessor 14 determines whether copying is to proceed (in bar-coding data), whether a password is required, or whether document classification is such that no copying is to be done. If a password is required, the user is requested, via the copier console 16 connected by I/O port 17, to enter the password.

Because ROM 15 holds classification status, bar-coding information and passwords, this system is easily tailored and field alterable for any company, organization or site. By changing ROM 15, any or all of the data is altered quickly. ROM 15 can be within a locked container to prevent unauthorized access.

Conversely, by programming alone, this mechanism generates multiple classified documents. Special paper stock, with the background bar coding imprinted, is inserted into the copier and via console 16 inputs, source registered documentation is produced.
