Present matrix printers require an ink ribbon in front of the print wires to transfer ink to the paper. The structure shown above can be utilized as a substitute for such an ink ribbon, and will provide the same functions without the need for ribbon guides, advancing devices and ribbon cartridges.

Referring to the figures, the structure has a plate 1 with spring fingers 2 alternately projecting inwardly from the sides of the frame 1 to form a row of eight ends in a line. The frame 1 and fingers 2 are covered on one side with a layer of a microporous plastic/rubber mask 3. The mask 3 will be impregnated with a printing ink and will be thickened at the inner ends of the fingers (Fig. 2) to form printing dots 4. It may also be thickened at 5 over the frame 1 to provide a reservoir of ink for the dots 4.

The frame 1 is mounted with screws or other suitable means on the print head 7 which also carries the print wires 8, and will be positioned to have its row of dots 4 between the wires 8 and the paper 9. Operation of the print wires will move the dots 4 into contact with the paper, to make a mark, in the same way as the ink ribbon is moved in present printers. Possible variations include the permanent magnetization of spring fingers 2 for electromagnetic propulsion to the paper or the making of the frame 1 and cover 3 out of a microporous spring metal to eliminate manufacturing operations.
