The figure depicts a programmable logic array (PLA) which is segmented via electronic means.

The figure shows an implementation of function using bipolar technologies. However, the function can be implemented in field-effect transistors (FETs) as well. The segmenting devices A, B, C, and D are switches in the product term, which are used to inhibit the preceding function. Implementation in the search array is also useful. For example, device A will prevent the function on A' from affecting the outputs, and device C is used to inhibit the product term or to prevent the function on C' from affecting the outputs. In both cases, the inputs are still a usable function with other product terms.

The control for this function would be on an encode function, in which four module pins could control 16 switches, five module pins could control 32 switches, etc. The size and number of these functions per module should be defined by machine requirements.
