Abstract

The machining of internal spherical surfaces with standard tools is difficult for the machinist. Without special tools it is almost impossible to obtain the proper uniform radius in the sphere without an excessive set-up time, making the workpieces difficult to manufacture in an economic fashion and to their precise internal dimensions. The tool illustrated in the drawing is particularly useful on a lathe and permits, with a single set-up, the turning of a perfect internal sphere.

The machining of internal spherical surfaces with standard tools is difficult for the machinist. Without special tools it is almost impossible to obtain the proper uniform radius in the sphere without an excessive set-up time, making the workpieces difficult to manufacture in an economic fashion and to their precise internal dimensions. The tool illustrated in the drawing is particularly useful on a lathe and permits, with a single set-up, the turning of a perfect internal sphere.

Turning to the figure, a workpiece 10, having at the outset a cylindrical bore therein, may be clamped to the chuck of a lathe for rotation. The turning tool 11 may be mounted on a fixture (not shown) and positioned in the dovetail slot 12, the height of the tool being adjustable in the vertical plane by, for example, a height adjusting screw 13. The tool includes a body portion 14 through which a slide 15 passes, the slide having an offset portion 16 through which passes a threaded bolt 17 that is threaded into the body 14. The offset L6 is preferably spring loaded by, for example, a compression spring 18 to inhibit backlash, the feed screw being connected through the offset to a crank 19, or the like, to permit longitudinal movement of the slide 15.
