Method for Improving Ease and Integrity of Hellarc Welding

The integrity of a HELLARC* weld between elements made of KOVAR** is improved if at least one of the elements is first plated with gold, typically to a thickness of 100-200 microinches.

This technique has been found to be particularly advantageous in fabricating vacuum systems, such as two-chamber cathode ray tubes, where KOVAR flanges are used because of their solderability to glass.

The improved weld provides the desired vacuum seal.
