The arc-shaped magnets 10 (Fig. 1) are magnetized and assembled in outer shell 12 of linear actuator 14 by the fixture 16 (Fig. 2).

The sequence of steps for magnetizing magnets 10 and placing them within shell 12 is as follows:
1. Initial state. a. The current in coils 18 and 20 carried by top and bottom rams 22 and 24, respectively, is off. b. Top ram 22 up UP and bottom ram 24 is down. c. Housing 12 is off magnetizer housing 26.
2. Magnetizer housing 26 is loaded. a. Arc-magnet segments 10 are inserted into the upper end of magnetizer housing 26, with housing 12 being removed. b. Top ram 22 is lowered so as to contact magnetizer housing 26. Ram 24 remains in its lowered position. Under these

conditions, windings 18 and 20 are in contact with the

ends of segments 10, and segments 10 are completely

within housing 26. Housing 26 carries an alignment

ring 28 which enters alignment ring cavity 30 in top ram

22, when top ram 22 is in contact with magnetizer housing

26.
3. Arc-magnet segments 10 are magnetized. a. A current pulse is applied to both of the windings 18 and 20 simultaneously for this purpose.
4. Unloading operation. a. Top ram 22 is raised. b. Motor housing 12 is then installed over magnetizer housing 26, as shown in Fig. 2. Motor housing 12 has

a tube 32 (constituting a shorted electrical turn) in

place, and an O ring seal 34 is disposed within tube 32. c. Top ram 22 is lowered so as to hold motor housing 12 in position on magnetizer housing 26. d. Bottom ram 24 is raised thereby forcing arc-magne...
