Abstract

Wool felt has heretofore been used in backup pad construction due to its relatively low friction, damping properties and magnetic media cleaning capabilities. The disadvantages of wool felt are that it can cause squeaking and vibration, dimensional stability is reduced in a humid environment, and bonding is difficult during assembly.

Soundhead Backup Pad

Wool felt has heretofore been used in backup pad construction due to its relatively low friction, damping properties and magnetic media cleaning capabilities. The disadvantages of wool felt are that it can cause squeaking and vibration, dimensional stability is reduced in a humid environment, and bonding is difficult during assembly.

In order to overcome the disadvantages and at the same time maintain the advantages of wool felt, the backup pad is made of a layer of medium density urethane foam having bonded thereto a TEFLON* impregnated glass cloth. * Trademark of E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Co.
