Abstract

Foil materials are normally available at standard thicknesses. When it is desired to produce foils thinner than the minimum available thickness, then electropolishing is a suitable technique. For example, HAVAR* cobalt-nickel-chromium-iron alloy is available as foil at thicknesses as small as 90 microinches.

Foil materials are normally available at standard thicknesses. When it is desired to produce foils thinner than the minimum available thickness, then electropolishing is a suitable technique. For example, HAVAR* cobalt-nickel- chromium-iron alloy is available as foil at thicknesses as small as 90 microinches.

Where it is desired to reduce the HAVAR foil to 40 microinches, for example, electropolishing can be carried out in an etching solution of about 60% orthophosphoric acid, 5% orthosulphuric acid, 30% glacial acetic acid, and 5% nitric. HAVAR foil having a thickness of about 40 microinches is suitable for use as a gap shim in a magnetic recording head core. * Trademark of Hamilton Watch Company.
