Reusable Bumper

A reusable elastomer bumper repeatedly permits rapid, controlled deceleration of a moving object in a short distance.

The bumper, constructed from a high-damping polyurethane material, includes two layers A and B, each acting as a separate stop with a nearly constant restoring force. In Fig. 1, the object hits stop A at an initial velocity Vi. In Fig. 2, the object is decelerated as stop A deforms. Just as the restoring force of stop A is depleted, it contacts stop B (Fig. 3). In Fig. 4, stop B continues to deform until the object velocity equals zero.
