Abstract

Two opposed four-position linear motors or air cylinders provide differential control for a controlled device by moving in equal and opposite directions at identical times. The controlled device may have two independent portions differentially controlled by their respective air cylinders, A and B, or a single device may be controlled for providing twice the power thereto from the two air cylinders.

Differential Step Actuator

Two opposed four-position linear motors or air cylinders provide differential control for a controlled device by moving in equal and opposite directions at identical times. The controlled device may have two independent portions differentially controlled by their respective air cylinders, A and B, or a single device may be controlled for providing twice the power thereto from the two air cylinders.

A single set of three valves controlled respectively by three solenoids, SA, SB and SC, provide the differential control. An air supply supplies low-pressure air over line L for returning the pistons in the air cylinders to a retrieved or home position while high-pressure air supplied over line H, via the three valves, selectively actuate the two air cylinders in a true differential mode. Solenoid SA, when actuated, forces piston A2 to move to the right while simultaneously allowing piston B3 to move to the left. When deactuated, the opposite occurs. Similarly, solenoids SB and SC control pistons A3, B2 and A1, B1, respectively.
