Hermetic Seal for Display

Silver chloride is used in sealing glass and thin-film metallurgy in, for example, a flat-panel electrochromic or liquid-crystal display.

The base 1 carrying metallurgy 2, e.g., electrodes, is sealed to a glass top panel 3 coated on its underside with conductive material 4 and by outer layers 5 of silver chloride in a suitable binder, separated by a glass spacer 6. The arrangement is heated to 470 degrees and cooled slowly to prevent crystallization of the silver chloride.
