In this time sharing display support facility, the stream of data to be displayed is separated from the stream of commands which control the display of such data, and the data is displayed in windows whose respective sizes and locations are determined by changeable modules in the command stream independently of the specific display device used.

Data supplied by a keyboard or other data source 1 is separated by a stream manager 2 into a display input stream 3 containing the display commands and a data input stream 4 consisting of the data to be displayed. Data from the input stream 4 is processed by a time-sharing data processor 5 to produce an output stream 6 of processed data. Under control of a display command executor 7, which responds to the commands in the display input stream 3, a display screen manager 8 assigns selected data streams or portions of data streams 4 and 6 to designated windows on the screen 9 of a display device. The available windows, such as A, B, C and D, for example, may be of various sizes and locations, as defined by appropriate command modules in the display input stream 3. If desired, some of these windows may be selected to display portions of the input command stream itself or a stream of error messages 10 which is generated by the command executor 7.
