Automatic Telephone Dial Directory

With this automatic telephone dialing system, an operator selects the displayed name of a party to be dialed from a succession of names in a stored table. A telephone number corresponding to the selected name and stored in another table is accessed upon display of the name and is used to drive dialing circuitry.

In the figure, angular position-to-digital address encoder 1 receives a mechanical, rotational input at knob 2 by the operator. As knob 2 is rotated, a succession of memory addresses are emitted by encoder 1 and applied to name storage table 3 and phone number storage table 4. The telephone number corresponding to the name in table 3, accessed by a particular digital address byte from encoder 1, is simultaneously addressed in table 4 by the same address byte from encoder 1. The name stored at the accessed location in table 3 is provided to display 5 for operator viewing. As knob 2 is rotated, a succession of names may be viewed at display 5. Each time a name is displayed, its telephone number is provided to outward dialing circuitry 6. When the operator has found the name of the party desired to be called, a positive DIAL signal is provided by the operator to dialing circuitry 6 to activate dialing in accordance with the telephone number provided by table 4. Keyboard 7 is used to construct and modify the list of names and corresponding telephone numbers stored in tables 3 and 4.
