Sheet Feeding Apparatus

This sheet feeding apparatus provides a floating upper sheet guide plate to insure reliable single-sheet feeding.

In the figure, a stack of paper sheets 10 resides on a platform 11. The vertical position of this platform is controlled by elevator motor 12, as this motor is controlled by stack height sensor 13. Sensor 13 and motor 12 operate to maintain the height of the stack's top sheet at a preselected level, within the operating differential of the sensor.

Picker roller 14, separator roller 15, restraint roller 16 and feed rollers 17 and 18 are driven in the direction indicated by a drive motor (not shown). All rollers rotate about fixed position axes. Picker roller 14 rotates intermittently, as a sheet is needed.

A stationary metal member includes a gross-shingling gate 20 and a lower sheet guide plate 21. Gate 20 limits the thickness of a multiple-sheet clump which can be picked off the stack by operation of picker roller 14. Guide plate 21 protects the bottom sheets of this clump from the scrubbing action of restraint roller 16, while allowing the upper sheets of the clump to be driven back toward the stack by the restraint roller.

Picker roller 14 rotates about axle 22. This roller and its axle are carried by an arm (not shown) which pivots about point 24.
