The flow chart is an algorithm for extracting extraneous operation bits from data transferred between a data set connected to an IBM 370 host system and a data set connected to an outboard IBM 3790.

The user specifies the outboard data set to be updated, the function required (ADD, REPLACE, etc.), and provides any necessary data. A program based on the algorithm shown builds a data stream containing control information (SNA FMH's) to select the data set required, select the function required, and then passes the data for the update. The program minimizes the line traffic by only including control information to select the data set and/or the function required if this has not previously been selected. If a different outboard data set is specified on the user's next request, then the current data set is deselected and the new data set selected by sending the appropriate control information.
