Magnetic Card Character Translation Table Redefinition

A method is described for converting IBM magnetic card characters (Tilt/ Rotate) to EBCDIC characters and EBCDIC characters to magnetic card characters where a variety of character sets are required.

One prior method of converting these character sets is by using a character conversion table under microcode control, as illustrated in Fig. 1. Each time the Mag Card Unit microcode is loaded, a particular character conversion table is also loaded. This method restricts the Mag Card Unit support to a single character set which is not well suited for word-processing applications where a variety of character sets are required.

The desired flexibility is achieved by defining a specific command, decoded by microcode, which moves an application-program-provided character conversion table into the location of the existing character conversion table in the Mag Card Unit microcode, as illustrated in Fig. 2. All subsequent character conversion uses the application-program-provided character conversion table.
