Selective Fabrication of Recording Head Gaps

The gap in a magnetic head is established by selectively altering the magnetic properties of the ferrite profile by ion implantation.

The accompanying schematic depicts a magnetic head having a profile section, a relief section, and a gap between both sections. The profile section is bombarded with an appropriate ion for a predetermined time such that the ferrite material is made magnetically inert to the desired depth g. The head profile can now be fabricated into a slider assembly for use in a recording head.
