Magnetic Head

A multitrack magnetic head achieves close tape track spacing by offsetting the gaps.

Closely spaced tracks on magnetic tape are accessed by head gaps formed obliquely to the head cores. The head-core construction tolerances are thus less critical than the track spacing would indicate.

Multisection cores are mated to define the gaps. The mating angle Theta determines the angle at which the gap is placed relative to tape travel. Read and/or write windings may be placed on legs of the core sections.
