Multilevel Ink Drop Deflection

Paper-drum speeds can be substantially reduced on ink jet drum printers by using multilevel deflection for the ink jet stream. With this technique, the number of drum revolutions becomes a submultiple of that required for single level deflection.

Multilevel deflection is accomplished by charging the drops with several different voltage levels and laterally deflecting these drops to different tracks on the print head spiral. By tilting the deflection plates to an angle dictated by the forms speed, the multilevel deflection drops can print a nontilted line on the form and, also, still print each possible dot required.
