Abstract

For purposes of obtaining uniform impressions, type elements are sometimes varied in thickness in direct proportion to the contact area of the respective characters thereon. When the elements are moving and a print hammer is fired with the same timing for all type elements, impact time will vary according to the thickness, and the image-to-image registration will correspondingly vary. Thick type elements will impact the paper before and thin type elements will impact the paper after the proper point.

For purposes of obtaining uniform impressions, type elements are sometimes varied in thickness in direct proportion to the contact area of the respective characters thereon. When the elements are moving and a print hammer is fired with the same timing for all type elements, impact time will vary according to the thickness, and the image-to-image registration will correspondingly vary. Thick type elements will impact the paper before and thin type elements will impact the paper after the proper point.

This registration is overcome by changing the hammer firing time according to the type element thickness. The correction can be done by starting the hammer pulse after a variable delay, which is predetermined linearly with type element thickness.
