Films of Eu iron garnet are used which are grown to a thickness supporting stable 7 micron bubble domains. These films are initially grown on (100) NdGa garnets, with the grown film having about 5 weight percent Pb. The quality factor of the grown film is 4.

Preparation of High K(u) Garnet Films

It is proposed to produce magnetic garnet films having high K(u), which are capable of supporting submicron magnetic bubble domains. Films of Eu iron garnet are used which are grown to a thickness supporting stable 7 micron bubble domains. These films are initially grown on (100) NdGa garnets, with the grown film having about 5 weight percent Pb. The quality factor of the grown film is 4.

The Eu iron garnet film is then etched away to reduce its thickness considerably. It has been found that the thin film (on the order of a few tenths of a micron) has sufficiently high K(u) to support stable, very small bubble domains. It is proposed that this is due to an inhomogeneous K(u), which is highest during the initial liquid-phase epitaxy growth of the film onto the nonmagnetic garnet substrate.
