Abstract

A paper-feed tractor 10 is supported by a rotatable shaft 11 (Fig. 1) which operates the tractor to feed paper. The tractor must be moved longitudinally along the shaft to adjust for paper of different width. After adjustment, the tractor mechanism must be locked against longitudinal movement to the shaft for rotation of the paper-feed element.

A paper-feed tractor 10 is supported by a rotatable shaft 11 (Fig. 1) which operates the tractor to feed paper. The tractor must be moved longitudinally along the shaft to adjust for paper of different width. After adjustment, the tractor mechanism must be locked against longitudinal movement to the shaft for rotation of the paper-feed element.

The locking structure comprises a sleeve-like collet element 12 concentrically arranged on the shaft 11. The collet element 12 has longitudinal resilient fingers 13 which deflect radially when pressed to grip flat surfaces 14 (Fig. 2) on the shaft 11. The ends of the collet fingers 13 have external circumferential cam surfaces 15. A rotatable knob 16 has a cylindrical opening with inwardly extending radial follower elements 17 which ride on the cam surfaces 15 of the collet fingers 13. Rotation of the knob 16 in one direction deflects the collet fingers 13 to lock the tractor 10 to the shaft 11. Rotation in the reverse direction releases fingers 13 from shaft 11. A limit stop 18 is provided on each collet finger 13 to limit the rotation of the knob when locking and unlocking the collet 12. Indicator marks 19 on knob 16 and sprocket shaft 20 (Fig. 1) show when knob 16 is in the lock position.
