Abstract

In a disk file employing a pack of flexible magnetic disks 1, splitter arm 4, permitting a magnetic head to access the record tracks, is radially moved from the periphery of the disk pack into a read/write position between two selected disks. Disks 1 are fixed to drive shaft 3 by spacers 2, spacing the disks from each other.

Splitter for Opening a Pack of Flexible Magnetic Disks

In a disk file employing a pack of flexible magnetic disks 1, splitter arm 4, permitting a magnetic head to access the record tracks, is radially moved from the periphery of the disk pack into a read/write position between two selected disks. Disks 1 are fixed to drive shaft 3 by spacers 2, spacing the disks from each other.

Splitter arm 4 is a conical trunk having a tapered end 6 of an increased cone angle. The relative movement between the cone surface and the surface of the deflected magnetic disks next to the splitter produces an air bearing which guides the magnetic disk at a distance from the splitter cone surface.

The surface of the nondeflected magnetic disk moves without coming into contact with the splitter arm 4 and can be accessed by a read/write head.

The air bearing is increased in its effect by air jamming chambers 5 (known as Rayleigh steps) provided of the generating line at the leading side of the splitter arm 4.
