Abstract

A gas display panel has X and Y dimension conductive lines that are formed on two glass plates. The glass plates are spaced apart to form light-emitting cells at the crossover points of the two sets of lines, and the plates are sealed at their edges to form an enclosure for an ionizable medium at low pressure. An alternating polarity voltage waveform, called a sustain voltage, is applied across the two sets of conductors to produce ionization and an associated flash of light at any cell that has been previously ionized by a write operation. The sustain voltage does not produce ionization at a previously erased cell.

A gas display panel has X and Y dimension conductive lines that are formed on two glass plates. The glass plates are spaced apart to form light-emitting cells at the crossover points of the two sets of lines, and the plates are sealed at their edges to form an enclosure for an ionizable medium at low pressure. An alternating polarity voltage waveform, called a sustain voltage, is applied across the two sets of conductors to produce ionization and an associated flash of light at any cell that has been previously ionized by a write operation. The sustain voltage does not produce ionization at a previously erased cell. Thus, the amplitude of the sustain voltage is set in the range between an upper voltage Vs max above which previously erased cells may be undesirably ionized and a minimum value Vs min below which a previously written cell may undesirably fail to ionize.

As gas panels age in their normal operation, the values of Vs max and Vs min may change. If these values change sufficiently, some of the cells of the panel fail to turn off after an erase operation or fail to re-ionize after a write operation.

It has been found that a cause of degradation of Vs max can be removed by proper manufacturing procedures. In the normal process of forming the conductive lines on the glass plates, the metallized glass plates are masked with a photoresist and the lines are etched through openings in the resist....
