Adjustable Concealed Latch for Separable Machine Covers

Many electronic instruments and machines may be enclosed in a two-piece enclosure whose halves are fastened together in normal operation. The drawing shows a side view of a portion of an enclosure 10 for a table-top computer.

Bottom cover 11 of enclosure 10 has an upstanding rear wall 12 provided with shoulder 13 and tab 14. Tab 14 has a threaded insert 15, which is required only if cover 11 is made of a nonmachinable material, such as structural foamed plastic. Along bottom wall 16 of cover 11, screws 17 are threaded into thick lower side 18 of U-shaped clevis 19 (shown partially broken away for clarity) having pin 20.

Top cover 21 slides horizontally along cover 11 until rear wall 22 engages tab 14 and rests upon shoulder 13. Stepped hole 23 is aligned with insert 15, so that screw 24 may lock the two covers together at rear walls 12 and 22. In this position, stamped metal hook 25 engages pin 20 to secure the front portions of covers 11 and 21 together. Screws 26 fasten hook 25 to the inside of cover 21. Ideally, pin 20 would bear against the slightly forwardly inclined surface 27 of hook 25 to hold covers 11 and 21 firmly against each other. Although normal manufacturing tolerances would preclude such a close fit, screws 17 may be adjusted, and readjusted, if necessary, to provide the required fit. Furthermore, the adjustment can be made while the machine covers are closed, so that no trial-and-error is n...
