Head Positioners for Flexible Disk Storage Apparatus

A record storage apparatus having a stack of flexible disks mounted for co- rotation between a pair of rigid plates has enhanced head accessing by an improved head actuator and head arm arrangement.

When an access opening is created in a disk stack, one of the disks assumes a shallow saucer-shaped form. When such a disk is to be transduced, an optimized transducing relationship between a head and the disk is achieved by the head following an arcuate path that approximates the curve of the saucer- shape. By using known mechanical design techniques, the desired arcuate path, which may involve a compound radius, is provided by the cam-type of actuator. A voice coil motor may be used in combination with the cam actuator for rapid accessing of tracks on the saucer-shaped disk.
