Abstract

In a stack of flexible record storage disks, an accessing arm (not shown) is interposed between two axially adjacent disks. In many such environments the disks are axially parted at their peripheries for enabling transducing access. In some configurations, the disks are mounted for rotation on a tubular spindle which has a central air passageway which permits air to flow radially outwardly through air-permeable annular spacers. For axially positioning transducer apparatus independent of axial fluttering of the disk, a flux sensor is mounted on a control piston axially movable within the central air passageway. The flux sensor may be a magnetoresistive element.

In some configurations, the disks are mounted for rotation on a tubular spindle which has a central air passageway which permits air to flow radially outwardly through air-permeable annular spacers. For axially positioning transducer apparatus independent of axial fluttering of the disk, a flux sensor is mounted on a control piston axially movable within the central air passageway. The flux sensor may be a magnetoresistive element. The control piston is suitably, movably mounted to be axially aligned with the transducing access apparatus (not shown) or the two can be null servoed to be axially aligned.

The record storage disks are alternately, radially magnetized in plus and minus directions at the radial inner portions for yielding the indicated flux path. As the flux sensor passes each radially recorded storage disk, the sensor supplies flux indicating signals to the control circuits, as indicated by the signal labelled "flux." The control circuits include peak detectors for detecting the signal peaks. A counter is responsive to the peak detector for counting the number of disks traversed. To select a given disk an address register is loaded with a count, indicating the desired disk.
