Abstract

Unshielded and unbiased magnetoresistive (MR) heads 1 are subject to Barkhausen noise. By placing a small permanent magnet 2 such that its flux field 3 produces small easy axis bias in MR element 4, the noise level is greatly reduced. The bias magnet 2 is moveable relative to MR element 4 to allow adjustment of noise reduction in head 1.
