A solar energy collector is shuttered in accordance with incident solar energy. Upon receipt of predetermined solar energy the shutter is automatically opened using the received energy, and upon removal of the solar energy the shutter automatically closes for preventing excess heat loss.

In the morning, the reflectorized (space blanket type) flexible shutter is in the extended position shown. Solar energy (sunlight) strikes the solar collector including the gas-filled chamber. The selected gas expands rapidly forcing the liquid down away from the chamber pushing the piston or float at the free end of the shutter upward. This causes the flexible shutter to roll on to the spring roller at the remote end of the solar collector. As the shutter opens, the impinging sunlight heats the inside of the collector for solar energy transfer, as is well known.

At the end of the day decreasing sunlight allows the gas in the gas chamber to cool and contract thereby forcing the fluid to move toward the chamber. This action pulls the piston with it, closing the shutter as the sunlight decreases.

Intermediate the liquid and the piston, mechanical advantage levers and gears and so forth may be interposed. The selection of gas and liquid can be made sensitive to particular wavelengths.
