Abstract

With the increased miniaturization of contacts for printed-circuit boards, for example, it has become increasingly difficult to repair and replace individual contacts in a dense array. This is in part due to the fact that the miniaturized contacts are more fragile, and it is difficult to heat just a singular contact without adversely affecting adjacent contacts.

With the increased miniaturization of contacts for printed-circuit boards, for example, it has become increasingly difficult to repair and replace individual contacts in a dense array. This is in part due to the fact that the miniaturized contacts are more fragile, and it is difficult to heat just a singular contact without adversely affecting adjacent contacts.

A tool which solves this problem consists of a number of blades 11, 13, 15, 17 and 19 as shown above. A plurality of spacer elements 21 are positioned between the blades at a distance equal to the distance between the rows of contacts in the connector assembly. As shown, a space exists between blades 15 and 17, providing an area 23 which will be an area over a contact to be repaired or replaced. For end or edge rework, there are portions removed from various blades. For example, one end of blade 11 is removed which permits a corner rework of a connector. Also, an end of blade 13 is removed which permits the rework of a connector at the outer edge. The alignment blades are held together by the rivets 25 and the blades are directly inserted in the contacts, thereby holding all of the contacts in a fixed position even though heat is being applied to the area 23. Therefore, even though adjacent contacts may be heated, they will not be moved because they are held in fixed alignment by the alignment blades.
