Abstract

To provide selectable resistance values for various current levels of operation in integrated circuits, a tapped resistor is typically used. owever, the interconnection of the tapped resistor is the same for arious current levels. For example, in Fig. 1, when the value Rl1plus R2 is required, connection is made between contacts A and C. When value R2 alone is required, connection is made between contacts A and B, with a short being provided between B and C by metallization 2.

To provide selectable resistance values for various current levels of operation in integrated circuits, a tapped resistor is typically used. owever, the interconnection of the tapped resistor is the same for arious current levels. For example, in Fig. 1, when the value Rl1plus R2 is required, connection is made between contacts A and C. When value R2 alone is required, connection is made between contacts A and B, with a short being provided between B and C by metallization 2.

With this design, more silicon area is used than is necessary. A better design is illustrated in Fig. 2, where both the spacing between contacts B and C as well as the width of resistor R1 are reduced to achieve the same resistance value with substantially less silicon area. The governing factor of the design then becomes the space required for making contact by first level wiring 2 to contacts B and C and/or the value of R1, instead of the contact-to-contact spacing.
