Abstract

A photographic film memory tape loop 10 contains coded information tracks 12 plus a clock track 11 (Fig. 2B). Loop 10 is air-supported by air flow from air inlet 34 to air outlet 35 and air driven by tangential air flow within loop drive 13 (Fig. 3). Speed control is not critical because the clock track controls transfer of data. Air pressure is low and can be supplied from a blower attached to a mechanism drive motor.

Figs. 1A and 1B show the assembly approximately to scale. The optical read head 20 is shown in Fig. 2A. It uses a fiber-optic array 21 to illuminate all tracks 12 from a single source. Inexpensive plastic rod lenses 22 are used to image the bits on a chemically-milled aperture mask 23 in front of a photo cell array 24.

In Fig. 1A, which is a plan view, loop 10 is propelled by drive 13. Air is supplied by inlet 34 and is collected from rings 32 at outlet 35. Air also passes through air-bearing inlet 31 to manifold 36 and collection rings 32. Differential screwhead incrementer 25 (Fig. 1B) operates drive 13.

In Fig. 2A, light source 26 illuminates light guides 21, and flexible air seal 27 seals shaft 28 which increments the head axially along shaft 28, with alignment being provided by pins 29 and holes 40.

Fig. shows the tape loop support arrangement with the loop inflation air flow both by edges 30 and from air bearing inlet 31 to collection rings 32.
