Abstract

An apparatus for edge blending parts, such as an element for a magnetic head, is shown above. The apparatus includes a base 1 on which is fastened a frame 2, blocks 3 and 4, and a sleigh 5 slidably fastened to the base 1 via a rod 6 and rod supports 7. An abrasive tape 8 is suspended across the frame 2 between two raised sections 9 and 10 of the frame. A constant tension force is placed on the tape 8 by weight 11 suspended between the frame 2 and the block 3. The tape 8 is suitably fastened, for instance, by adhesive, to the blopks 3 and 4, or the tape tension and feed can be provided by suitably braked supply and take-up spools (not shown) to provide a fresh abrasive surface when worn.

Edge Blending Apparatus

An apparatus for edge blending parts, such as an element for a magnetic head, is shown above. The apparatus includes a base 1 on which is fastened a frame 2, blocks 3 and 4, and a sleigh 5 slidably fastened to the base 1 via a rod 6 and rod supports 7. An abrasive tape 8 is suspended across the frame 2 between two raised sections 9 and 10 of the frame. A constant tension force is placed on the tape 8 by weight 11 suspended between the frame 2 and the block
3. The tape 8 is suitably fastened, for instance, by adhesive, to the blopks 3 and 4, or the tape tension and feed can be provided by suitably braked supply and take-up spools (not shown) to provide a fresh abrasive surface when worn.

The sleigh 5 is formed to suspend over the tape 8 and rest on the frame 2. An elongated slot 12 (see view A-A) is provided in the sleigh 5 for a transfer tool 13 to which is fastened the part to be edge blended, such as a head element 14. The slot 12 is tapered from top to bottom to allow the tool 13 to tilt back and forth a distance d as the sleigh 5 is drawn along the tape 8.

To edge blend using this apparatus, a part such as the head element 14 is fastened to the transfer tool 13, for example, by an adhesive. The transfer tool 13 is inserted into the slot 12 to place the head element 14 into contact with the tape
8. The sleigh 5 is then drawn back and forth on rod 6. The weight of the transfer tool 13 provides the downward force for holding the part 14 a...
