A digitizing tablet can be used to control a processing program operating with an IBM 7406 device coupler, without the use of a terminal. Once the program is started, the tablet can be operated as a terminal.

When tablets are controlled with a minicomputer or a small computer, such as an IBM/1130, the data can be processed as recorded to control the processing. For example, horizontal or vertical lines can be specified, origins can be re-specified or alphanumerics can be inputted from paper keyboards. For small-to-moderate data rates, tablets with minicomputers can be fully interactive.

There are many applications where the volume of data must be large, such as character recognition, curve tracing, signature analysis and picture digitization. These instances are best served with a device coupler loading data into a large computer, such as an IBM System 370/168. The large volume of data can then be sent to many users or stored for later reference or processed for enhanced graphic display.

Data when transmitted through a device coupler and its control software must be transmitted in a buffered block of data of fixed size. This is because the receiving control program cannot predict the input data volume. Also, in order to transmit data at the maximum rate, no time can be lost to examine each piece of digitized data as with a dedicated computer.
