Abstract

U.S. Patent 3,961,372 discloses a device and method for controlling the flying height between a flexible media and a magnetic transducer by positioning two parallel slots, one on each side and perpendicular to the transducing gap of the magnetic transducer. The device in the patent controls flying height in a rotating head device where the magnetic head rotates or in a flexible disc environment where the head is stationary and the disc rotates.

U.S. Patent 3,961,372 discloses a device and method for controlling the flying height between a flexible media and a magnetic transducer by positioning two parallel slots, one on each side and perpendicular to the transducing gap of the magnetic transducer. The device in the patent controls flying height in a rotating head device where the magnetic head rotates or in a flexible disc environment where the head is stationary and the disc rotates.

The above figure shows another design whereby inboard slots S1 are positioned on either side of magnetic core E. Positioned on either side of S1 are outboard slots S2. This configuration is particularly advantageous for a head having a small radius R. The two surfaces, A and B, provide a bridge support for the magnetic core E, where E is desired to have extremely close flying height to the flexible media.

Thus, by controlling the width of A and B and the slots, such as S1 and S2, a controlled flying height is obtained over E. Also, the wear of E will be arrested by wear resistance of surfaces A, B and C. Of course, several types of configuration can be designed by one skilled in the art without deviating from the approach disclosed herein and in the patent.
