Abstract

A polyamic acid prepolymer solution provides an improved conformal coating when a ternary solvent system is used. The following compound of materials has been found to be preferred for achieving this improved conformal coating system: 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone (55%), acetone (35%), xylene (10%) and solid-polyamic acid (4% to 8% by weight).

Conformal Coating System

A polyamic acid prepolymer solution provides an improved conformal coating when a ternary solvent system is used. The following compound of materials has been found to be preferred for achieving this improved conformal coating system: 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone (55%), acetone (35%), xylene (10%) and solid-polyamic acid (4% to 8% by weight).

The range of boiling points of these solvent materials allows the conformal coating system to cover the object being coated in a more uniform manner.

This polyamide system has a 295 Degrees C glass transition temperature and is fully cured at 180 Degrees C. When fully cured, the product has no residual solvents to increase the linear coefficient of expansion and no silane additives to alter the basic polymer structure in a random fashion.

The described system eliminates the needs for silane additives while optimizing the amount of polymer solids added to the compound to arrive at a desired selection of physical process properties for uniform conformal coating.
