Method to Eliminate Toner Migration after Transfer

A solution to the problem of toner migration after the transfer station in an electrophotographic system is shown and described.

The system comprises electrophotographic drum 10 on which is produced an electrostatic image which is developed by a developer powder. At transfer station 12 the powder image is transferred to a record member 14, such as paper. Transfer is accomplished by the action of transfer corona 16 which produces a charge on the back of record sheet 14 to attract the powder image from drum 10 to sheet 14.

In the process of transporting the imaged sheet 14 to the fuser station (not shown) the paper comes in contact with various surfaces which create changing electrostatic fields. These new fields are both nonuniform and of various potentials and polarities in relation to the original charge on the paper. When these fields are tangential to the image field, they can be of a high enough magnitude to dislocate toner particles to a new field area. Depending on the polarity of the field, the toner particles can either be pulled forward during this field change or pulled back as the image leaves this tangential field. The polarity is caused by the triboelectric charging between paper and material. The solution to migration is to minimize or eliminate the tangential field interaction.
