An electric field may be used to enhance the sensitivity of a scintillator material useful to convert high energy radiation to visible radiation.

The presence of an AC field applied to the phosphor ZnS:Mn results in a gain of 20-30, where gain is defined as the photoelectroluminescence under the influence of the AC field divided by the photoluminescence in the absence of the AC field. The gain has been found to be a function of the applied field and incident radiation wavelength. In the phosphor ZnS:Mn the maximum gain is at the electroluminescent threshold field of the phosphor and the gain is inversely proportional to the wavelength of radiation.
