A page display device employing a linear array of electrically switched light- emitting diodes (LEDs), a rotating fiber-optic horizontal scanner, and a vertically rotating mirror is shown in the drawings.

Typically, for displaying a page of alphanumeric characters wherein each character is formed as a 7 x 9 matrix display, there would be nine LEDs in a linear array 10, each of which is coupled to a corresponding optical fiber in each of the sets 11, 12, 13, 14 via the concentric coupling regions 11a, 12a, 13a, and 14a. Each of these coupling regions includes a plurality of gratings formed as concentric arcs.

The fibers in each set are gently curved from the coupling region to the exit, this being a line of fibers lying along an element of the rotating scanning disc 15. As the disc 15 rotates, each set of coupling regions will be successively presented to the LED array 10 for receiving the individual illumination therefrom.

Each LED and its corresponding fiber in each successive set will trace a complete line of light in the horizontal raster. The array 10 will produce nine parallel traces. If the individual LEDs are selectively switched in synchronism with the disc rotation, a line of characters will be swept by each successive set of fibers.

The vertical scan is provided by a rotating mirror 16 which is synchronized with scanner 15 and the electrical control of the diodes. If a scanning speed of 1/40 second per page is chosen as an e...
