Auto Select Function for Unattended Personalized Document Creation

The Auto Select capability in a word processing system provides a method of assembling documents having personalized text contents from standard text segments stored on a bulk storage device, such as a diskette. The Auto Select function is a submode of the Merge File/Text task, which operates in unattended playout mode.

The Merge File/Text task consists of merging fields of sequenced and qualified records (typically, names, addresses, etc.) with stored text, to produce personalized documents and envelopes. A text job on the diskette contains the standard document text while a file job on the diskette consists of records containing fields to be inserted into the standard document text. The operation consists of the following steps:

(1) A record is selected from the file based on sort (sequence) and qualify parameters;

(2) The first page of the document is read from the text job and merged with the appropriate fields of the selected record;

(3) The page is then transferred to the printer or other output device;

(4) Other parts of the document (if any) follow steps 1 - 3 until all pages of the document have been transferred; and

(5) Steps 1 - 4 are repeated for each qualified record until each of such records have been selected.

As seen from the above, the same document is personalized with respect to the file data and transferred to the printer for each of the qualified records in the file. The Auto...
